The ACHA Health Graduate Nurse Program (GNP) aims to provide a supportive and flexible learning environment to assist graduates to consolidate their nursing knowledge and skills based on the Australian Nursing Council Incorporated (ANCI) Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse, 3rd Edition – May 2000.
OBJECTIVES
The Graduate Nurse Program will assist the graduate by:
- Enabling the graduate to develop their competence as a Registered Nurse
- Providing a clinical environment which supports and encourages the consolidation and development of nursing knowledge and skills
- Providing support and feedback
- Facilitating feedback on performance and progress
- Encouraging and enabling reflective nursing practice
2010 COURSE STRUCTURE & DURATION
The Graduate Nurse Program is a 46-week clinical program, based on full-time employment, with 6 weeks annual leave. The course may be offered part-time by negotiation with the relevant Director of Nursing. Formal commencement date is Monday 8 February 2010.
We offer:
- 1 day Hospital Orientation
- 1 day Program Orientation with clinical workshops
- 6 paid study days with clinically-based topics
- At least 1 day supernumerary unit orientation for each clinical placement
- Clinical placements across a broad range of clinical specialties, according to Graduates choice
- Opportunity to do placements at 2 of 3 hospitals
- Every attempt is made to meet placement requests
- Minimal night duty (average 2-3 nights a month, less or none in some areas)
- Competitive pay rates with salary sacrifice options
OPTION 1 – Specialty Program
Graduates who select this option will be allocated to a specialist area, spending the year in a Critical Care area of their choice: ICU, CCU, & Perioperative including Anaesthetics & Recovery
OPTION 2 – General Program
Graduates who select this option will spend six months each in two different areas of their choice

2010 APPLICATION GUIDELINES:
1. Applications are available to

2. Applications must include:
- Completed application form
- Covering letter
- Curriculum vitae
- Most recent academic transcript
- Most recent clinical placement report
- Names and contact details of 2 clinical referees (please ensure that your referees are from an acute care setting and are able to comment on your nursing practice as a 3rd year student)
3. Selection for the program is based on:
- Completeness and quality of application
- Successful interview – all suitable applicants will be invited to attend a 15 minute interview with two Clinical Managers
- Applicants may also be asked to attend a Work Capacity Assessment
4. All offers of employment as a Graduate Nurse will be subject to registration with the Nurses Board of SA. Graduates must hold a current Certificate of Registration (Practising Certificate) and must present it to their Unit Manager prior to commencement.
